Latest wildlife action at EnzeliWild
Seeing a big hole had been dug to access a bumble bee nest at the top of our meadow, we set up the trailcam to see what we could capture. Alongside pigeons, blackbirds, an odd fox and a roe deer, these were the most notable clips. Unfortunate that two species are not native, but interesting all the same. The golden pheasant has been visiting since the start of the year - an escapee from a pheasant rearing pen close by. He still has to acquire his full breeding plumage so we're hoping he sticks around until then. He's an amusing little fella that we call Goldie - follows the normal female and male pheasants around with little hops and skips, trying his luck!

The Manatees of Crystal River
Переглядів 40Рік тому
The West Indian manatee, sub-species Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) frequents the warm springs in rivers and estuaries found in central Florida. Homosassa has an underwater observatory allowing excellent views of the manatees in the river. Unfortunately virtually all adult manatees from this region have scars from boat collisions, with some individuals showing signs of 10 or m...
"The Bandit" - Common raccoon in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Florida
Переглядів 80Рік тому
Raccoons are always fun to watch, and these animals in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida's Big Cypress Swamp certainly entertained - one on the heavily protected bird feeders (pah, what protection!) and the other behaving naturally looking for underwater treats such as crayfish to eat. Although this raccoon didn't catch anything while we were watching there is an aspect of raccoon behaviour ...
The Burrowing Owls of Marco Island
Переглядів 703Рік тому
Marco Island in Florida is a hotspot for burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) where they are protected. Marco Island is a highly built up area but any available patches of grassland have cordoned off space for the owls to make their home. Being so heavily populated the owls have the security and are less likely to be predated from the air. This family of adults with 5 almost fully grown young ar...
What a lotta Otter fun!

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Big Cypress Swamp, Florida is an amazing reserve. We came across these Northern River Otters on one visit, content sleeping on the boardwalk, before waking up and grooming then investigating everyone gathered to watch them. The Miraculous Deer of Florida Keys
Переглядів 65Рік тому
Visiting Big Pine Key in Florida in April 2019, we were blessed by amazing views of the smallest sub -species of American White-tailed deer, the Key deer. There are less than 1000 of these tiny deer left, mainly on Big Pine Key. How they survive the hurricanes that hit the Keys is beyond belief, however only 21 died during the six foot surges of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Incredible! Music from Ep...
Meet A Leopard Named Akira (or should that be Olakira?)
Переглядів 270Рік тому
On a final game drive in February 2020 we found this little beauty, a six month old female leopard cub. As she sat and watched us, I asked what "a star" would be in the local Maa language. And Nelson told us "Olakira". The name was put forward to the guides meeting and adopted, in an abbreviated form - "Akira", as "Olakira" was deemed too masculine. Fast forward two years and we are back in Ola...
Iconic Fig! RIP
Переглядів 1672 роки тому
Only one day after returning from Kenya, we were devastated to hear that Fig, the Queen of leopards in Olare Motorogi conservancy of the Maasai Mara, had been brutally murdered by a male lion. We sat watching her in this tree only days before her killing. She was heavily pregnant, expected to give birth towards the end of the month so another precious life or two lost! This is the nature of the...
Sharing a feast with Cheetah cubs!
Переглядів 3 тис.2 роки тому
Our first afternoon out at Mara North conservancy in Kenya last October, and we were so fortunate to see these wonderful little cheetah cubs with their mum Kisaru at a Thomson's gazelle kill. At that time they were around 3-4 months old and still covered in lots of fluff. I loved some of the action: watch particularly at 53 seconds, 1min 17sec and 1min 29 sec - these little behaviours make me s...
Leopard Natito with her adorable cub Ndoto in Mara North Conservancy
Переглядів 1522 роки тому
I felt privileged to spend a long period of time over two days with mum leopard Natito and her beautiful female cub, since named Ndoto, in Mara North conservancy, Kenya in October 2021. The first morning was tricky to say the least. My Kicheche guide Jimmy, as usual, managed to get us into the only viewing window where, despite much greenery, I managed to capture lots of action between mum and ...
Hanging out with tiny lion cubs!
Переглядів 24 тис.2 роки тому
On my last visit to the Maasai Mara in October 2021 I was fortunate to spend time with one month old lion cubs of a female from the Acacia pride. My guide from Kicheche Mara North camp, Jimmy Tinka, manoeuvred our vehicle on a very rocky slope so that we could see the lioness lying out in some bushes. A couple of cubs came out to join her but were mostly hidden by the bushes as they suckled. Ov...
Elephants of the Maasai Mara
Переглядів 1462 роки тому
I find elephants are tricky to portray in colour. I have masses of footage of African elephant and never seem to get around to editing it. Having some spare time I decided to play around with black and white. And it works, at least I think it does. Quite a lot of tweaking needed to get the contrast and light correct. These elephants were filmed on two visits to the Mara Conservancies in Kenya, ...

A full day recording session took place at our hall with our MD Pete Nugent, in groups to mitigate Covid issues, followed by a program of filming with all the chorus and LOTS of editing. I hope you like t...
Ardnamurchan from the Air

My first foray into aerial drone photography, while on holiday on the Ardnamurchan peninsular, West Coast Scottish Highlands in May. The video includes clips taken in the amazing oak woodlands at Salen. I used a DJI Mini 2 for the footage, a tiny little beast that packs a punch despite its size! No doubt that's true, but we were told by our captain that it was possible to stroke them if they approached as they enjoy the contact. Not something we would normally have done. But we certainly weren't harassing the animals in any way, something that can't be said for a party of girls from another boat!!

I saw one with some poachers once, they had drugged it I guess and were going to sell it to the wildlife trade. It was lying on the ground where they were sitting, by the side of the road. When I approached they looked jumpy and said its sleeping, but obviously wanted me to move on.

What a shocking and upsetting loss, especially as she was pregnant. But I'm very sorry to read the description "brutally murdered" - that's anthropomorphism but from the dark side, not the 'cute' Beatrix Potter angle we're all (unfortunately) inured to! I don't believe 'murder' can ever be the right description of competition to the death between predators in nature or indeed the killing of one animal by another in any setting.

    • @EnzeliWild
      @EnzeliWild 2 роки тому

You are right, of course, I was so shocked at the time of hearing the news and realise my wording is not appropriate. Fig's death is so unfortunate but her soul lives through the cubs she brought to maturity.
